Custom Cabinets vs. Off the Shelf Cabinets

Feb 19, 2015

When it comes to cabinets, there are a whole lot of variables and choices. The best cabinets will offer the perfect amount of storage and the ideal design to meet your individual needs. Two of the most common types of cabinets are custom made and off the shelf.

With closer inspection, you will find these two types of cabinets completely different in style, price and construction. Basically, custom cabinets are measured; designed and built to fit a specific area. As a rule, they are built to order. Off the shelf cabinets are made in standard sizes and are readily available from a store's supply of merchandise.

Compared to custom cabinets, off the shelf cabinets are usually the least expensive. This is because off the shelf cabinets are made in high volumes with lower grade material and hardly any customization. As well, cheaper cabinets are generally not made of solid wood. Particle board is typically used for the box along with low quality hardware, poor rails and a common everyday finish.

Sometimes off the shelf cabinets are higher priced, making t seen like it is better quality. But unfortunately, higher priced off the shelf selections can sometimes have a solid face that covers a veneer frame. If you are not familiar with veneer, it refers to a thin layer of wood (less than 1/8 inch) that is glued together to form core panels.

Custom cabinets are higher priced but are definitely built to last a long time.

Depending on the company, degree of quality and construction can really vary. High end custom cabinets are made from solid wood with top quality materials and a nice unique finish. They are also very durable, not at all like off the shelf cabinets that tend to fall apart rather fast.

In honesty, custom cabinets will save you more money in the long run. Rarely do they need replaced or refinished. On the other hand, low grade cabinets need to be replaced quite often. Even painting or refinishing these cabinets can be problematic or impossible unless the surface is constructed of solid wood or wood veneer. Hence, custom made cabinets are by far the most economical.

Better Design and More Choices

Off the shelf cabinets are standard size and very limited in design options. There is a standard size with no variables for all cabinets. If you need cabinets a specific height, width or depth; off the shelf cabinets are not recommended. Then again, custom cabinets are built to your specifications and designing needs. In fact, design options and sizes are nearly infinite. As well, you can select from a variety of hardwoods and varnishes to match your d├ęcor.
